Everybody Edits is a game created by Chris Benjaminsen. It is a real-time, multiplayer, two-dimensional, platform game where players interact and create worlds for others to enjoy. There is no real goal in the game, rather it acts as a sandbox where users can create experiences for each other.

Everybody Edits on Android
Thanel is the only one who develops the Android application of Everybody Edits. He will not have a lot of free time to work on it for around 2015 April 15 (as Thanel said around one and a half month in 2015 March 31) which means that until then the development will go very slowly (although he is currently doing some solid changes in the core to speed up later development).

History
Flixel Walker
The first version of the game was a test by Chris Benjaminsen on Wednesday, 3rd March 2010 to test the Flixel Engine, he called it "Flixel Walker" and it started in this thread in the Flixel forums.

Multiplayer Platformworld
After Flixel Walker, Everybody Edits started to be a simple test grounds for Chris, called Multiplayer Platformworld. Also referred to as EE 0.1 now, it had minimal features, only having the minimap, 6 smileys that were just a circle and a color (for example red), and the following blocks: Gravity, Basic, Brick (excluding the tan & dark red), '_' faced block, Metal, and the leaked, old black brick. It gained popularity and continued to grow.

Everybody Edits 0.5+
Chris made EE 0.5, the first real version of EE. This consisted of a lobby, with only open worlds in it. There were no blocks or smileys added, though. When it was added, people would gather in one room (most of the time, the top corner one), and major trolling would occur. At the peak of its time, at least 1 person would be in every room. This changed when EE 0.6 came out.

Everybody Edits 0.6+
EE 0.6 included naming rooms, and locking them with a code. Moving with WASD was added, direct linking with www.everybodyedits.com was added, and new blocks were added. When naming & locking levels came out, crews began to form. The caution block was the first addition to the blocks. When the next set of blocks were added, Chris also added an up and down arrow to scroll through the blocks. Many complaints about not being able to use the old black block anymore made Chris add a new black block with a little shine on it . Many of these block updates merge into EE 0.7.

Everybody Edits 0.7+
As EE 0.7 rolled in, many blocks and smileys were added. Keys, Locks, and Gates were the first functional additions to the game. This spawned the first series of "Trap Rooms", later renamed to bosses or key bosses. A few other additions to the blocks were Crowns, Grass, the tan and dark red Bricks, and Coins. Gold coins were added first, then blue for a short time. Chris took the blue coins off instantly and asked to reach a donation of $500 USD before he re-added them. Major trolling, as of flying (There was no God Mode then) and and jumping really high were done by trolls/hackers. This was fixed by an anti-hack. Also, the first non-free thing that was added to EE, the Smiley Package, consisted of the 6 Beta smileys, and it cost $5 USD for them. People were getting mad that they had to pay so much, so Chris let players choose the price for a short time (Whoever had the Smiley Package got Beta for free later on).

Everybody Edits 0.8+
During this time, Chris was mostly doing bug fixes, but also made the new interface (dragging blocks into the menu), user accounts (first used only Facebook, then made EE only accounts), and most importantly, made Beta. After the new block interface was added for Free & Beta, Chris focused on Beta more. Beta first cost $10 USD (Beta use + Smiley Package), and people were mad that whoever payed a penny to get the Smiley Package, got to play Beta for free. Chris later lowered the price down a nickel ($9.95 USD). the very first additions to beta were fullscreen and mute (The only use mute has is to turn off the coin sounds). Saved worlds was one of the last additions of EE 0.8. Chris mainly uses Beta at first to test new features before Free users. It was almost a month before the Free EE got updated again (To EE 9.0).

Everybody Edits 0.9+
EE 0.9 is the most recent time for EE (0.9.2.1), and many new features, including chat, the shop, and profiles. Many additions to the shop were different sized worlds, smileys, and blocks/items.

Everybody Edits 1.0+
This version does not exist yet, but this will be when Everybody Edits will officially be Version 1. Chris and the other developers are currently in a "development sprint" for version 1.0 of EE.

Everybody Edits 2.0
Version 2.0 added campaigns, a system to manage crews in-game, and removed woots. In addition, it featured a UI redesign of the lobby, and the shop was returned to a layout similar to how it was in EE v0.9.

Players that have become familiar with Everybody Edits may eventually attempt to create a gaming experience for other players, most commonly in the form of a Platforming Map. In the same way that Everybody Edits allows players to make varied and unique creations with the various bricks, a Platforming Map can be as new and original as its designer's imagination.
Mapmaking consists of five common phases. Below are some guidelines that can both help first-time designers who are overwhelmed by the process of mapmaking, as well as provide insight to experienced players looking to refine their craft.

Brainstorming
Before you start, you need to have a basic idea of what you want to do, (for example; the theme of your map). This can be any sort of idea; a theme can range from climbing a birthday cake, to recreating World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros, to collecting coins in minigames. Any of these themes are starting points for designing your map. Here are some questions that are worth asking yourself as you develop your idea:

* Do I want my map to be fun?
* Is this a cool idea that will keep people interested enough to finish the map?
* Would I be excited if I entered this room and this is what I found?
* Does it matter how many people play my map?

When you have settled on a theme, you need to decide what sort of theme it is. Platforming Maps are either Art Themed or Challenge Themed. While the best maps will have art that makes spaces for cool level designs as well as cool level designs that make sense with the art, all maps start as one of the two themes.

Focusing on Challenges
If your map is centered around some type of puzzle or challenge concept specific to the Everybody Edits game, then it would be Challenge Themed. These maps are often less demanding to create compared to Art Themed maps; however, depending on the type of challenge developed, Challenge Themed maps can offer some of the most interesting, difficult and creative challenges, as they do not have to conform to a drawn landscape as with Art Themed levels.

Focusing on Art
If your map is based first on some illustration you would like to do, then it would be Art Themed. These maps will have the levels 'carved' out of the art; the designer will look at the illustration made and consider how to make it challenging for the smiley to progress. Sometimes the designer will quite literally have to carve out parts of his art to make a puzzle work by deleting blocks. Whenever you have an Art Themed map it will require some compromise between the puzzle design and the art design. This is expanded upon in the Creation section below.

Regardless of which theme you decide is best for your map, it's important to make sure the basic concept is good enough to take into the planning stages. Ensure that the idea not only appeals to you, but to others as well since EE is a social network that depends on the participation of numerous players. Additionally, make sure to assess if your idea can be realistically implemented in EE, since not all concepts can be properly made into a map.

Planning
Once you have decided on a suitable theme, you can start to plan your map. Depending on the size, detail and number of people helping with the map, the amount of planning you do before you start drawing the map will vary. The first thing you should do is ask yourself a few questions about your resources:

* Do you have a saved map with a size best suited to the map you are designing?
* Do you have enough time to commit to creating your map well, or will you need helpers?
* Will you need skilled players to help with your Challenge Themed map, or talented drawers to help with your Art Themed map?

Registered players, particularly those with enabled chat accounts, should find trustworthy helpers for their projects.

Sketching
If you are working on an Art Themed level, you will want to make a sketch, especially if you are working with helpers or using a fairly complicated idea. This would be a rough outline made in MS Paint or some similar program that would show the basic layout of your map, including the path(s) the player will take and important areas, such as the location of a boss, bonus, or the finish. Make the sketch as rough or as detailed as necessary, which will depend on your needs. Some Challenge Themed maps might require sketches if the path the player is taking is complex, or, again, if you are sharing it with helpers. For a detailed tutorial from sketch to completion of an Art Themed map, visit Ravatroll's Playable Landscapes Construction Tutorial.

Building
If you are planning a Challenge Themed level with new challenges or unique puzzles, you should develop your puzzles before you put your map together. Unique rooms can take a long time to design, so a good way to avoid space conflicts in your map is to have the puzzles made beforehand and recorded in screenshots. This way you can design challenges with people in other maps, then later bring them all together in your saved map from screenshots. Make sure to consider how to connect all of the rooms beforehand, and be prepared to mirror or rotate rooms to make the best use of space as needed. For insights into developing unique challenges, see the Designing Challenges page.

Creating
Now that you have decided on your theme and made some planning steps as preparation, you should now begin work on your Platforming Map. How you will build your map depends on a few considerations, one of them being, again, whether you are working with art or challenges. The best way to begin the creation of any map is to first outline it. Open your map, and use a random map name to keep it hidden and unpopulated. You can easily hide a map by using one of several words that the EE worlds list prohibits, and always make sure to block off the starting point to ensure players cannot start running around your map if they discover it. Remember to use commands such as /reset and /loadlevel as needed, such as when mistakes are made in level construction, blocks are accidently overwritten, a helper ends up trolling, or to send intruders back to the start.

Outline
It is important to start with the drawing of an outline that will show 'what' goes 'where'. Even if you are building a Challenge Themed map, you should begin your map development with an overall outline that shows the size and order of your puzzle games. If you are building an Art Themed map, the outline itself is a part of the drawing process as you transform your sketch into level bricks. A good outline will be just be lines drawn one block thick that show the boundaries between sections of your map. Once you have divided up your map, it is time to start building. However, be prepared to change your outline as you come across issues and problems you may have overlooked in the planning phase. Flexibility is highly important when trying to produce a great rather than good map.

Progressive vs Chunks
There are two approaches you can take to building your level: you can either build it from the start to the finish progressively, or build it in chunks that come together in the end. Depending on certain factors, you may find one approach to be more desirable than the other:

Progressive
Pros

* If you do not have any prepared challenges, working progressively allows for more freedom in building, as there is little need to worry about 'fitting' a challenge to the difficulty or path of previous and future areas.
* If you are working with an Art Themed map, you can adjust the level by your needs as you go along.

Cons

* Can lead to conflicts of interest when having to work alongside others to complete each individual section.
* If you run out of ideas, it is difficult to spend time working on other areas as a break without causing problems for the path and spacing of areas.

Chunks
Pros

* If you are working with multiple people, it may be quicker to have them work on different sections on the map outline, rather than clumping up on one section.
* If you have screenshotted challenges that you are able to put in, it is better to put them in at the start of the building process so as to avoid a spacing problem later.

Cons

* Working on different sections at once may create sharp spikes or falls in the difficulty for the player, requiring the designer to make changes in the editing phase.
* Requires more planning and organization to execute correctly.

Generally, solo builders or builders dealing with Art Themed maps should tend towards building progressively, while groups of designers or Challenge Themed map designers should consider working piecewise with chunks. You may find that certain parts of your map will require one approach or the other.

Collaboration
If you have a group of people interested in building your map with you, there are steps you can take to ensure that your map comes together smoothly even as different designers work on different areas. Since map designing is a creative project, it has to have a limit on the individuals with control over the final design, otherwise things will fall apart very quickly with disagreements and poor map organization. With a high number of helpers, one of the head designers should act as a central 'hub', who would work to organize map development by keeping tabs on all the contributors and the various chunks being constructed. It's very important to always show the other contributers respect to prevent heated arguments, and it is critical to have a way to resolve disputes over level design.

Designing Tips
As the map begins to fill up with art and challenges, there are some important design considerations you should think about:

Color Scheme
Though there are exceptions, generally ugly color schemes do not keep players. This is less of a concern for minigames, where the rooms are often different colors and the walls are all one block thick. There are exceptions to this rule depending on how critical a certain color is to the overall map theme.

Pathing
Most maps send you through an endless tunnel of challenges with no chance to rest or branch out. Consider adding easter egg bonuses, multiple paths, and areas that are simple and fun to pass. Allowing a player to rest and explore will help balance out any intense challenges and will also prevent ragequitting. Even if you open the map up, there should still be an obvious direction for the player to go.

Innovation
Creating challenges for a map can take a very long time and you might find yourself running out of ideas. Just as it is important to have an interesting theme to maintain player interest, the challenges too should be different from both other maps and other challenges within your own map. Having different designers contribute their own 'style' challenges can be a great way to keep your levels fresh for the player. Never settle with a challenge; if it feels boring and/or tedious, make sure to change it. There are no time limits to making a map, and the extra time spent improving challenges will lead to a much better product in the end. Read more about room design here.

Testing
Invite your testers to try the challenges, and, when you are ready, the entire map. If you have your choice of testers, do not use people who are simply good players, they should also be players with a good judgment of the difficulty and creativity of a challenge, and who will try to complete it with exploitative shortcuts before your actual players do so. If you have co-designers, have the testers work with the creator of each separate challenge, since the creator already knows which is the correct method for beating their challenge. If your goal is to make an easier map, make sure to invite players who are not pros in terms of skill level so they can make accurate assessments of what needs to be changed and what is fine. Also be prepared to take a lot of criticism during this phase, and do not disregard opinions that go against your own personal view without seriously considering the suggestion.

Releasing and Editing
When the map is ready for your finishing touches, add any last minute artistic changes and a title or URL link to an external chat or webpage if applicable, then prepare it for a public 'beta' test. Change the map name to the correct title and fill it up by inviting people, or, if necessary, join the game with multiple windows.

There is alot of opportunity for editing during the beta phase, as having a large amount of random players makes for an unbiased test of difficulty and enjoyment. Watch for bottlenecks: 'clump-ups' of players in a room that is more difficult than would be appropriate for its placement. If many players are stuck at the same place, it is usually a sign that place is in need of some editing. If you are willing, make the challenge a little easier by adding or removing some blocks or arrows, then see if the players are able to proceed. If you have any co-designers, have them keep a close eye on player progress in various locations, fixing exploits or making changes when necessary. Pay close attention to the chat as well, since you will likely receive a lot of early feedback especially with things people really like or dislike.

Don't worry too much if the map didn't turn out perfectly, most of the time it's impossible to make a map that completely satisfies your initial plans and goals, but that does not mean your map is poor. Make sure to learn from the mistakes you made while making the map to avoid making the same ones in the future. The more you build and learn, the better you will become at making maps, and the more people will enjoy them.

Make a final save with a version you are happy with, and, finally, have a go at the map yourself!

Everybody Edits Beta is the testing platform for new features that the Staff plans on adding to the game. The beta program was created on August 17, 2010 by Chris. To enter the beta program, you had to have donated any amount of money in the past, or paid the current $9.95 USD or 100 gems beta price. Originally, the beta was only available to people with a Facebook connected account, but later Chris added an in-game login system. The regular client on and the beta client have usually been compatible and have shared levels, but for a short period following the updates in version 0.8.4, the beta version was no longer backwards compatible with the regular version. That meant that the levels created in the beta program were only playable for other beta users. But, this was only temporary and beta members could still play their saved levels on the public Everybody Edits page. On December 20, Chris made both the public and beta games compatible again. On December 21st regular users were given access to the Shop, one of the first beta-tested features to become available for regular users.

Current features only available to Beta Members:

These are common puzzles featured in EE. Entire rooms can be made out of them, but normally they are used in a single section of a room as a minigame.

Hook Jump
The Hook Jump (E-Block, F-Block, Ninja Jump...), consists of any solid block type with another solid block placed either two or three blocks above. They are sometimes accompanied by a wall to one side, as pictured. There is also sometimes another wall placed two bricks to an open side of the Hook Jump, jumps which have these walls are generally considered easier as it's harder to overshoot. Some times the level creator will place a gravity dot or arrow on the block where the player stands to attempt to make it more challenging. But if they place an arrow that is pointed to push the player off, the player can simply hold space and the direction directly opposing the arrow, and they will quickly hop up the wall. Single space hook jumps are considered to be extremely difficult but can be completed.
Hook Jumps are usually found chained together, and levels have been created that consist of nothing but Hook Jumps repeated over and over again.

Dot trail
Dot trails, also known as anti-gravity rails, consist of gravity dots chained together. The length of the trail varies depending on the level's designer, as well as the complexity. At times, it is possible to bypass lengths of the dot trail if the design permits. Sometimes, level designers will add blocks at different spots in dot trails to make them simpler to navigate. By adding a solid block beyond the edge of an intended direction of travel, it prevents the player from flying off carelessly, as the player is squared with the next line of dots.

Tight-fit
Before, Tight-Fit puzzles were much more tedious to complete since smileys had to be in the exact position before being able to successfully jump through a tight-fit hole. However, as of the latest update, a feature called grid-locking automatically aligns a smiley to the grid if close enough to a grid square. This makes passing these puzzles much easier. Once you can fit, you have to time your jump and movement correctly so you don't end up moving after the jump; losing your place and forcing you to start over.

Anti-gravity drop
Similar to Tight-Fit, this puzzle needs you to drop from a height to a hole in the floor, and if you miss there are arrows to carry you to the top again. There are multiple variations to this and they can go in all directions except for upwards. Many use an arrow instead of an anti-gravity dot.

Loop
If you find yourself in one of these pictured to the right, (no exit) then you are stuck moving forever. This is rarely found in puzzles, but it may be accompanied with dot trails and reverse gravity gimmicks so you can escape. They are not always in a square and can come in different shapes that can span large areas. Since the addition of gems and the shop, they have become increasingly popular for energy generators. These are used as AFKs (Away From Keyboard) sometimes.

Hop-Skip
This is simply a block evenly (or unevenly) spaced usually with a drop or arrows below. These blocks are sometimes locks with a key on the end to send the others back to the beginning. They can range in difficulty and can have different gravity bricks placed on top of them, making it more difficult to land or jump from.

Stairs
Stairs are locks stacked like stairs that ascend a tower, ultimately reaching the top of the stage. At the top the only way to pass to another part of the world is to go through a key in an opening, which will dump any unsuspecting players down to the bottom. Stair worlds usually consist of 3 - 4 stairs but can span across an entire world, taking up the entire minimap. Solid bricks are normally added near the walls to be used as safe spots or to catch falling players. Many players quit the level the moment they see stairs on the level. This is because they either believe it is un-original, easy, a waste of time, or simply there to take up space. It is relatively easy to be annoying in levels with stairs, as players who get to the top can just sit there on a block that is usually solid. They simply wait at the top, then they will drop down, hit the keys and drop other players when they see them getting close. These people will most likely use the Ninja Smiley if they have it, making themselves harder to see on the mini-map.

High jump
High jump is a common puzzle that consists of a wall that is 4 or more blocks high. At the bottom it has an arrow, or a dot, for a high jumping. These can be affected by lag and can be learned over time. Some bugs, such as the multi-key bug on laptops can prevent players from completing these. Multiple arrows can be used with more than 4 blocks that requires the same method but gives a different look. A single block ceiling is often used for when multiple High Jumps are placed next to each other to prevent a player from jumping from the top of one to the top of another.

Elevators
Elevators are usually designed to be quite tricky. The player can travel up them and usually has to move left or right to make sure they don't fall all the way back to the bottom. These are created by having alternating lines of spaces and arrows and can be recreated horizontally or vertically. The fewer arrows there are on a line, the less chance there is of continuing up the elevator, so you are more likely to fall back down it. The line of arrows will usually branch out into many different paths, which people must pick at random. There is usually only one path that actually takes the player up. The others either lead to a coin or a whole lot of nothing, causing the player to be sent back down.

Arrow tower
An Arrow Tower consists of stairs with one arrow facing against you on each step. The easiest way to beat this challenge is by holding space and the arrow of the direction you want to go in.

Side-fit
Side-fits are usually used in boss levels. The goal is to step off the top block and fit between both before the boss pushes you off with arrows. The simplest way to complete these is to lightly go off the top block and to directly press the opposite arrow when you start falling.

Coin puzzle
A coin puzzle is a kind of logic think puzzle. When you want to solve the puzzle you have to get the coins in the right order. When you fail you have to start again. If the level owner didn't add World Portals, click 'Go to lobby', and then go back.
Outdated

Outdated

A single block ceiling is often used for when multiple High Jumps are placed next to each other to prevent a player from jumping from the top of one to the top of another. levi48 says:it is kind of hard

Or as an alternative method, click 'Share' and copy the URL and paste it in your adressbar of your webbrowser and refresh the page as much as you need.
